RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The 15th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 13-9 decision to UC Riverside Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Riverside Sports Complex.
The Toreros (34-19) wasted no time in scoring as they pushed across four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning. With two outs, the Toreros got things started as they extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a single to right field. James Meador then launched a two-run blast over the left field fence to give USD its first two runs of the game. Nick McCoy was then hit by a pitch and Zach Walters drove in McCoy with a run-scoring triple to centerfield. Bryan Haar then capped the scoring with a RBI single to left field to give USD a 4-0 lead.
UCR (29-22) then took back three runs in the bottom of three second inning to pull back to within one at 4-3. The Highlander runs came on a USD fielding error, and a Brian McConkey two-run double.
The Highlanders then evened the score in the bottom of their third inning on a Justin Schults RBI single, scoring Ryan Brantley, who had doubled, to move the score to 4-4.
Riverside then took the lead with a three-run bottom of the fourth inning. The Highlander runs came on Brantley RBI single and a two-run single by Schults to give UCR a 7-4 lead.
The Toreros responded in the top of the fifth inning as they scored three runs on four hits. Dillon Checkal got things started with an infield single and he moved to second on an Engell walk. Meador then drove in Checkal with a run-scoring double. Back-to-back RBI singles by McCoy and Walters then tied things up at 7-7.
UCR then exploded to score three-runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while USD scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to put the game at its final of 13-9.
Offensively for the Toreros, Meador led the way as he went 2-for-5 with one home run and four RBI. Engell went 2-for-2, and Walters also had a good day at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two triples, and two RBI.
Darrin Campbell (2-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Dustin Emmons (7-4) picked up the win on the mound for the Highlanders as he allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they return home to begin a three-game WCC series with the Gaels of Saint Mary's. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
