SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Francisco Dons (8-10; 2-1 WCC) handed the USD Toreros a 65-55 loss at the Jenny Craig Pavilion this evening. It marked the 4th straight league game where the Toreros (3-15; 0-4) were either tied or held a slim lead at the half, but were unable to close the deal over the final 20 minutes. Senior captain Devin Ginty was the lone Torero to reach double digits with 14 points. USF received a game high 21 points from junior guard Rashad Green, along with double digit performances from forward Perris Blackwell (14 points) and Michael Williams (11 points).
In the first half the Toreros held a slim 25-23 advantage as both teams struggled to find their shooting touch from the field. Ginty tallied 7 first half points, while Chris Gabriel chipped in with 6. In the second half the game stayed close through the first five minutes as a Gabriel free throw had USD down just one at 34-33 with 15:06 to go. From there the Dons went on a 9-1 run over the next 3:17 to go up 43-34 with 11:49 to go.
The Toreros rallied and scratched their way back into the lead at the 7:37 mark, 46-45. The 12-2 San Diego run was led by five different Toreros scoring, including four points from freshman Dennis Kramer and the go ahead basket by Matt Dorr. The lead only last 12 seconds though as USF's Perris Blackwell converted both free throws and the Dons would not relinquish the lead down the stretch.
Sophomore center Chris Gabriel grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds to go with 8 points. He is the first Torero this season to reach double digits in the rebounding department this season. Dennis Kramer added 6 rebounds to go with 7 points and 2 blocked shots. USF outrebounded the Toreros 41-30 for the game, and held a 20-12 advantage over the final 20 minutes.
San Diego heads to the bay area for a Wednesday night contest at first place Saint Mary's College. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and will be televised locally on Channel 4 San Diego.
