NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Balanced scoring helped propel the University of San Diego women's basketball team (11-7) to a 66-50 win over Cal State Northridge (1-17) Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at the Matadome.
Dominique Conners led the Toreros scoring effort with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field, and Amy Kame was the second USD player to score in double-figures with a career-high 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Emily Hatch also had a good game as she scored six points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Kameron Knutson had a career-high eight points and Julia Bennett also had a career-high with seven points. As a team, USD shot 50% from the field and out rebounded the Matadors 46-43.
After Northridge grabbed the first four points of the game, a Conners jumper ignited an 8-0 San Diego run that was capped on a Conners fast break lay-up to give the Toreros the momentum and a 8-4 lead with 14:36 to go. The Matadors then kept things close over the next several minutes as the teams traded basket-for-basket until the score was at 12-10 in favor of USD. Then a Nicole Ballestero jumper jump started another 6-0 Torero run to give USD some breathing room and an 18-10 advantage with 7:19 to go. The Toreros and Matadors ten traded basket-for-basket over the remaining seven minutes of play in the frame to give USD a 31-21 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, USD came out hitting on all cylinders as they slowly build up their lead to as many as 20 at 45-25 on a Sam Child 3-pointer with 13:55 to go. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 66-50 victory.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they return to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to host the Saint Mary's Gaels in a 2 p.m. WCC game.
