SAN DIEGO, CA - The USD Toreros set a new single game record for field goal percentage (69%) on their way to a 76-65 victory over Cal State Bakersfield before 2,121 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Sophomore center Chris Gabriel scored a season-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, and Darian Norris added 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting. As a team the Toreros made 29-of-42 shots from the field, breaking the old record of 66% (31x47) set against Saint Mary's back on January 17, 1991.
The Toreros (4-16), who played a solid game this past Wednesday at 21st-ranked Saint Mary's College, carried over that momentum into today's contest. The 76 points was the most offensive production since their 82-57 win over La Verne back on December 13th, and today's 29-21 lead in the rebounding department was USD's first positive outcome in 10 games. Matt Dorr was the third Torero to reach double digits with 11 points. Dorr was joined by Gabriel and Dennis Kramer with 6 boards each.
With a 33-25 intermission lead, the Toreros went out and shot a blistering 78.3% (18-23) from the field over the final 20 minutes. USD increased its biggest lead to 20 points (57-37) with 9:48 to go, but then saw the Roadrunners battle back to within 8 points at 63-55 with 4:46 to go. The Toreros were able to answer immediately with an 11-0 run which started with back-to-back baskets by Darian Norris, and ended with a three-pointer from Devin Ginty as USD upped their advantage back to 19 points at 74-55. From there the Toreros were able to close out the game for the 11 point victory.
The CSU-Bakersfield Roadrunners (8-11) were paced by guard Donavan Bragg (16 points) and forward Stephon Carter (15 points).
USD hits the road this coming week for road games at Portland (Thur., Jan. 27th, 7:30 pm) and Gonzaga (Sat., Jan. 29th, 5:30 pm).
