SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Emily Hatch and Dominique Conners both scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped a 70-49 decision to Gonzaga University in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 11-9 overall, move to 1-6 in the WCC and have now lost three straight games. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 19-4 overall and remain perfect in WCC action at 7-0.
Conners led the team with 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, while Hatch scored 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting, and she nearly had a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman guard Amy Kame also had a good night for the Toreros, as she scored eight points, had five rebounds and dished out three assists. As a team, USD shot .407 from the field, but the Zags out rebounded the Toreros 38-31.
In the first half, the Toreros kept things close in the early going, then with the score knotted at 4-4, a Courtney Vandershoot jumper ignited a 9-2 Gonzaga run to give the Bulldogs the momentum and a 13-6 lead with 13:36 to go. The Toreros then answered right back, as a Izzy Chilcott lay-up jump started a 9-2 San Diego run to tie the score up at 15-15 with 10:03 to go. The Bulldogs then answered right back with another run, this time a 14-4 run, to take a 10-point lead at 29-19 with 6:29 to go. The Toreros sliced into that lead and cut the deficit to six at 31-25 with 3:01 to go, but the Zags would then push it right back up to 10 points, as they went into the break up 37-27.
In the second half, San Diego came out hitting on all cylinders, as a Kame jumper ignited a 10-2 Torero run that pulled San Diego back to within two at 39-37 with 13:12 to go. The Zags however, would then continue to accordion its lead between four and nine points overt the next seven minutes. The Zags then slowly began to push its lead back up to double digits, and closed out the final six minutes of play on a 16-3 run to put the game at its final of 70-49.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they begin the second half of WCC play with a road trip to Los Angels to take on Loyola Marymount in a 7 p.m. game.
