LOS ANGELES, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's tennis team narrowly dropped their final match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend to #43 Pepperdine, 4-3, Monday afternoon from the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The #67 Toreros (1-2) battled with a number of competitive singles matches, but in the end the Waves (2-1) proved too much.
After having the match postponed one day due to rain, the Toreros started the match slow by losing their first two doubles contests. The Toreros' No. 1 doubles pair of juniors Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica fell to Marie Zalameda and Khunpak Issara 8-3, dropping Coupez and Sujica to an even 4-4 on the year. Then the Waves clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory as Anamika Bhargava and Andrea Oates topped USD's No. 3 tandem of Anna Depenau and Stephanie Hoffpauir.
Pepperdine's Arianna Colffer opened up singles play with a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory over Coupez at the No. 4 position. Coupez, tied for the team lead in wins, dropped to 5-6 in singles play this season with the loss.
USD got on the board with the next match as Marite Raygada earned her second dual match win of the season and improved to a perfect 4-0 overall with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Megan Moore.
Hoffpauir kept the momentum going for the Toreros when, playing at No. 1 for the second consecutive match, cruised past Zalameda 6-0, 6-4.
Pepperdine answered, however, when Issara came back to defeat freshman Josymar Escalona 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Fellow freshman Depenau tallied another point for USD when she pushed past Oates 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, earning her fifth singles win of the season.
With the final match deciding the outcome, USD sophomore Laura Claus captured the first set 3-6 over Bhargava, but was unable to close it out, eventually dropping the final two sets 6-4, 6-2, giving Pepperdine their second win of the season.
The Toreros are still looking for their first win over Pepperdine since 1990, when they won 6-0 at home. USD is now 2-44 all-time against the Waves.
USD returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 6th when they host the Washington Huskies at 10:00 a.m. from USD's West Courts.
