SAN DIEGO, Calif.- With their sights set on bouncing back from a disappointing loss at Gonzaga their last time out, the University of San Diego men's soccer team handed West Coast Conference leader San Francisco their first conference loss of the season with a 1-0 shutout Friday night from Torero Stadium. The Toreros (6-5-1, 3-1-1 WCC) got the game-winning goal from sophomore Elijah Galbraith-Knapp in the 62nd minute, while San Francisco dropped to 5-5-2 overall and 3-1-1 in WCC play.
USD held an 8-4 advantage in shots during the first half in which the Toreros kept the pressure on the Dons' defense. Neither team was able to come out with a goal in the opening frame, however, stretching the scoreless streak at Torero Stadium over the past two matches to 155 minutes.
San Francisco's offense came out more up tempo in the second half, edging USD 7-3 in shots throughout the period. But despite the advantage in shots, the Dons were afforded very few real scoring opportunities against the Torero defense, which tallied its fourth shutout in five conference matches.
In the 62nd minute, USD worked the ball into San Francisco territory where Stephen Posa delivered a pinpoint pass to the top of the six-yard line where Galbraith-Knapp was there secure it. After a brief moment where it looked like USF keeper Brendan Roslund might corral the save, the ball bounced past him and Galbraith-Knapp had a wide open net to tap the ball in, giving him his second goal of the season and USD the 1-0 lead they would ultimately hold on to.
The Toreros made sure not to let another lead slip away after letting Gonzaga rally back last week from a 2-0 hole in the 77th minute. That task was made more difficult when the Toreros had to play a man down after Conor McFadden's red card led to his ejection in the 82nd minute.
Senior keeper Adam Campbell recorded two saves on the day en route to his fifth shutout of the season and improved to 6-3-1 on the year. Roslund who had his four-match shutout streak snapped, took the loss after making three saves and dropped to 5-4-2.
Miguel Aguilar led the Dons with three shots in the contest, while five different Toreros talled two shots. The Toreros held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
USD welcomes WCC foe Santa Clara to Torero Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 16th for a 2:00pm kickoff.
