Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's soccer team wrapped up a strong weekend of West Coast Conference action with a 2-0 shutout of Santa Clara Sunday afternoon from Torero Stadium. Junior forward Patrick Wallen and sophomore midfielder Elijah Galbraith-Knapp notched goals for the Toreros (7-5-1, 4-1-1 WCC), while Santa Clara fell to 6-5-3 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

The Toreros posted their fifth shutout in six WCC matches so far this season. Senior goalkeeper Adam Campbell, who has been in goal for all five of those shutouts, recorded five saves against the Broncos and notched his sixth overall shutout of the year to improve to 7-3-1.

Despite a 6-2 Santa Clara edge in shots during the first half, the Toreros made the most of their limited opportunities when Wallen scored in the 19th minute. Junior midfielder Dan Delgado served a perfectly placed entry pass from the left wing low into Wallen, who slid as he met the ball directly in front of the goal, pushing it past Bronco keeper Larry Jackson for his third goal of the season and second score in WCC play.

The Toreros added to the lead in the 62nd minute when Galbraith-Knapp scored his third goal of the season and second in as many matches. Galbraith-Knapp found himself at the right place at the right time when freshman defender Thomas Fiskerstrand headed a corner kick off the cross bar and Galbraith-Knapp flew in with the diving header that gave USD their final 2-0 lead.

USD overcame some very physical play that included a total of five yellow cards and a red card issued to Santa Clara's Johnny Martinez in the 88th minute. Both teams combined for 29 fouls in the contest.

Wallen led all players with three shots in the match, while Fiskerstrand, Galbraith-Knapp, and senior Stephen Posa each had two shots apiece. Phillip Muscarella, Glenn Vass, and Erik Hurtado each had a pair of shots for the Broncos, who held an 11-9 edge in shots overall.

Jackson had three saves in goal for the Broncos in his first action of the year.

The Toreros will hit the road when they travel to San Francisco for a 7:00 pm match on Oct. 28th.
