SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a double-double from Emily Hatch, and a double-digit performance from both Sam Child and Morgan Woodrow, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a 74-65 win over the University of San Francisco Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 13-11 overall, move to 3-7 in the WCC ,and they have now won two of their last three games. With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-19 overall and 1-8 in the WCC.
Hatch recorded her eighth double-double of the season, as she recorded 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor, and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Child scored a game-high 18 points on 7-for-18 shooting, and Woodrow was the final USD player in double figures as she recorded 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting form the field. San Diego shot .424 as a team and out rebounded the Dons 39-32.
In the first half, San Diego came out firing on all cylinders, as they raced out to a 7-2 lead over the first 1:27 of the game, thanks to hot shooting from Child, who hit a 3-pointer and a lay-up for five of those first seven points. The Dons then answered back and went on a 8-3 run to pull even with USD at 10-all with 15:39 to go. The two teams then sea sawed back and forth a bit over the next several minutes. Then with the score knotted at 20-all with 10:51 to go, a Nya Mason jumper ignited a 10-2 Torero run to give USD all the momentum and its first double-digit lead of the evening with 6:35 to go in the half. USD would go on to build up its lead to as many as 14 with 4:50 to go, but the Dons then closed out the half on a 11-6 run to pull the lead down to nine at 42-33 heading into the break.
In the second half, the Toreros and Dons played a pretty even first 12 minutes of action with San Diego clinging to a double-digit lead for all but two minutes of the first 12. The Toreros would go on to build up a 18-point lead at 70-52 on a Woodrow 3-pointer with 5:56 to go to give USD a comfortable lead. The Dons then made things a bit interesting later in the game, as they managed to pull back to within nine at 70-61 with 3:04 to, but San Diego proved to be too strong to overcome, as USD held on to win 74-65.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they conclude the home portion of the schedule with a 2 p.m. WCC game against the Santa Clara Broncos. USD will hone its senior class of Child, Hatch, Sara VanderHorst and Mason in a pre game ceremony.
