SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Morgan Woodrow scored a game-high 12 points, and Dominique Conners added in with 10 points, but it wasn't enough, as the University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped a 54-44 decision to No. 25 Gonzaga University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 13-5 overall, and fall to 4-2 in the WCC. With the win, the Zags improve to 17-3 overall and move to 6-1 in the WCC.
Woodrow scored her game-high 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting, while also recording three steals. Conners scored her 10 points on 4-for-17 shooting from the field, while also pulling down six rebounds. Izzy Chilcott tied Conners for a team-high with six rebounds. As a team, USD shot .327 from the field, and were out rebounded 48-34.
In the first half, USD managed to grab the first four points of the game on a lay-up by Woodrow and a jumper by Conners. But the Zags quickly tied the game up at 4-all, before the Toreros put together a 6-0 run to regain the lead and momentum at 10-4 with 14:39 to go. Gonzaga would cut the deficit to four at 10-6 on a Haiden Palmer jumper with 13:36 to go, but then the Toreros locked in on defense and held the normally potent Bulldogs offense in check not allowing a single GU basket over the next four minutes. During this stretch, San Diego went on a 5-0 run to take a 9-point lead at 15-6 with 9:28 to go.
USD would eventually build up its lead in the first half to as many as 12 at 20-8 on a Woodrow 3-pointer with 7:24 to go. But the Zags found some momentum and managed to close out the half on a 15-3 run to go in to the break with both teams knotted at 23-all.
In the second half, it was a back and forth affair in the early going, the the teams trading basket-for-basket. USD would then put together a small 5-0 run to grab a 32-27 edge with 16:43 to go. GU then went on a run of their own, as they used a 6-0 spurt to take only their second lead of the game at 34-33 with 12:11 remaining. After the Toreros would take one more lead at 35-34 on a Amy Kame jumper, Gonzaga would respond with a 9-2 run to grab a 7-point lead ay 45-38 with 7:52 to go. USD then managed to hang to within six points over the next three minutes, however, this is as close as USD would get, as the Zags managed to slowly pull ahead and led by as many as 12, before settling for a 10-point win.
For Gonzaga, Katelyn Redmon tied USD's Woodrow for a game-high 12 points, while Palmer was the only other GU player in double figures, as she scored 11. As a team, The Bulldogs were held to a .343 shooting percentage, thanks in large part to a stingy USD defense.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they make a quick trip up to the Bay Area to battle the University of San Francisco, before heading home on Saturday to host Pepperdine University in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside the jenny Craig Pavilion.
