SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a balanced offensive attack, that featured four different Toreros in double figures, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (7-3) cruised their way to a 67-49 non-conference win over Long Beach State (4-5) Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Klara Wischer, Alysse Barlow and Maya Hood all recorded 13 points, while Amy Kame chipped in with 12, to lead the USD offense. As a team, USD shot .443 from the field, and shot .900 from the charity stripe. The Toreros were edged in the rebounds category, 35-34.
In the first half, LBSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead over the first two minutes of action, but then a Barlow 3-pointer evened the score and sparked a 9-2 San Diego run that was capped on a pair of Wischer free throws, to give the Toreros a 11-7 lead with 16:00 to go .
The 49ers would answer right back with a 4-0 run to pull even with USD at 11-all on a Ella Clarke lay-up with 12:54 to go. USD refused to surrender the lead however, as a Maya Hood lay-up gave the Toreros back the lead at 14-12 The two teams then traded basket-for-basket over the next several minutes, with USD maintaining the lead until a Bianka Balthazar 3-pointer evened the score for the last time in the game with 7:22 to go. Back-to-back baskets by Maya Hood and Malina Hood then ignited 9-1 Toreros run over the remainder of the half to give the Toreros a 30-22 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, the pace of the game picked up considerably, as both teams were adding a full court press, and just sprinting from one end of the floor to the other. USD however, would be on the better end of this, as they went on a 14-4 run over the first 5:15 of action to take a 18-point sled at 44-26 with 14:45 to go.
It wasn't long after that that USD was able to push their lead up to 20 on a Barlow 3-pointer with 12:02 to go, giving San Diego a 49-29 lead. USD was then able to maintain at least a 20-point lead over the remainder of the half and would eventually lead by as many as 28 points on a Wischer jumper with 4:13 to go. USD never looked back, as they then cruised their way to an 18-point win.
The Toreros will now have 13 days off before then open play in the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic against Central Michigan at 6 p.m., inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Dec. 28.
