SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team came up on the losing end of a close one, falling to cross-town rival, the San Diego State University Aztecs, 58-54, on Saturday afternoon halting the Toreros five-game winning streak.
Both teams kept each other in check throughout the opening minutes, but the Toreros (6-2) turned on the gas and created a 12-0 run over nine minutes to bring the game to 25-14 with 4:28 left in the half.
The Aztecs (5-3) wouldn't be undone however, and forced 9 straight points to cut the Torero advantage to just two points. USD managed to keep SDSU in check, closing out the first half with a 29-25 lead.
Coming out of the locker room, the Aztecs rallied off of their late second half momentum and kept USD on its heels. After taking the lead, SDSU widened the gap on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes, leading 47-39, with 7:11 left on the clock.
The Toreros managed to regroup and fight back, leveling the contest at 52 points a piece with 1:22 left in regulation.
A quick SDSU four points forced the Toreros to start fouling, but the Aztecs managed to maintain the lead through the buzzer, finishing it off with the 58-54 victory.
Junior guard Amy Kame and sophomore guard Alysse Barlow led the scoring effort for USD, as both players had 12 points. Forward Klara Wischer managed to haul in a career-high 15 rebounds, while Maya Hood added in 10 points. As a team, USD shot .324 from the field and was slightly edged in rebounds at 48-47.
USD will look to bounce back against Arizona State on Wednesday with an 11 a.m. tip in Tempe, Ariz.
