San Diego Too Much for Pacific

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (3-2) completed a double-header sweep on Friday afternoon as they defeated the University of the Pacific (0-6), 6-1, in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

Behind another dominating pitching performance from senior right-hander Paul Sewald, the Toreros were able to keep the normally potent Pacific bats at bay. Sewald (1-0) allowed one run, while scattering just four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Michael Wagner then came on in the eighth inning and was able to pick up his second save of the season, allowing no runs on two hits in 2.0 complete innings of work. Pacific's Michael Benson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Tigers as he allowed two runs on eight its in 6.0 innings of work.

The Tigers were able to get on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the second inning. The Pacific run came on a Riley Drongesen RBI sacrifice fly to right field, which scored John Haberman, who doubled to lead off the frame, giving UoP a brief 1-0 lead.

The Toreros then answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the second inning on two hits. Bryan Haar got things started with a single to left field and moved to second when Louie Lechich drew a walk. After both runners moved up one base on an Andrew Daniel sacrifice bunt, Austin Bailey was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Dillon Haupt then drove in Haar on a RBI single to left field and Dillon Checkal brought in Lechich on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give USD a 2-1 lead.

The Toreros then scored an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an AJ Robinson RBI single, to give USD starter Sewald a two-run lead as he left the game.

San Diego then capped off the game and put things completely out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning, as they scored three runs on four hits. The USD runs came on a Julian Duran RBI single and a Kris Bryant two-run single to left field, putting the game at its final of 6-1.

Offensively for the Toreros, Haupt led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Bryant went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while AJ Robinson went 2-for-4 with one RBI and Daniel went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they host No. 21 Oregon State in a 1 p.m. game at Cunningham Stadium.
