Toreros Thump Wildcats in Home Opener, 15-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a dominating pitching performance from junior right-hander Calvin Drummond, and a 16 hit parade from the Torero offense, the University of San Diego baseball team (2-2) cruised to a 15-1 win over Kansas State University (2-3) Friday morning in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.

Drummond (2-0) picked up his second win of the season, as he allowed one run on six hits, while striking out eight batters in 7.0 innings of work. His counterpart, Matt Applegate (0-1), was saddled with the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Kris Bryant led the Toreros offense as he went 3-for-5 with a towering home run over the centerfield fence, and he recorded four RBI. Corey LeVier also had a productive day at the plate, as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Bryan Haar went 4-for-5 with three RBI himself and Andrew Daniel recorded a pair of hits to round off the Toreros with multiple hits.

San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of hits. Dillon Checkal got thing started with a walk and moved to second on a LeVier singled to left field. Haar then drove in Checkal with a RBI single through the left side to give USD a 1-0 lead.

The Toreros then added two more runs in the bottom of the third on LeVier's first home run of the season, a two-run blast off the right field foul pole to give USD a 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats then managed to spoil the shutout for the Toreros in the top of the fourth inning when Mike Kindel hit into a double play, which scored Wade Hinkle, who had walked, to move the score to 3-1.

The Torero bats then exploded in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they scored five runs on four hits. The USD runs came on a Lucas Hagberg sacrifice fly, a three-run homer by Bryant to dead centerfield, and a Haar RBI single to give USD a comfortable t 8-1 lead.

USD then added in seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to round off the scoring for the day.

USD returns to action at 2 p.m. today as they host the University of the Pacific.
