As a team, USD shot .431 from the field, but was out rebounded 35-31.
In the first half, the Zags were able to take advantage of a slow offensive start for the Toreros. USD managed to grab the first basket of the game on a Conners jumper, then the two teams began to sea saw back and forth with each team taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two over the first 4:32 of action. Then with the score knotted at 6-all, a Katelan Redmon free throw sparked a 7-2 Gonzaga run to give GU a five-point lead at 13-8 with 11:12 to go.
The Zags would then go on a 10-4 run to take their biggest lead of the half at 23-12 with 5:20 to go. However, the Toreros then clamped on the defense, and went to work, as they managed to go on a 9-2 run to close out the frame to go into the break only down four at 25-21.
In the second half, the two teams were engaged in a heated battle, as they began trading basket-for-basket with the Toreros hanging to within five points of the Zags for a majority of the game. USD did manage to cut the lead down to three on several occasions, but were not able to get any closer, as GU would respond with small runs to regain the momentum. The Zags would lead by as many as 12, before settling for an 11-point victory.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday when they host the University of San Francisco in a 7 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
