SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 18-point effort from Dominique Conners and double-digit performances from three other Toreros, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a 74-63 West Coast Conference victory Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 17-6 overall, move to 8-3 in the WCC and have now won four of their last five games. With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-21 overall and 2-10 in the WCC.
Conners scored her 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, while dishing out three assists, pulling down four rebounds and recording three steals. Amy Kame was the second of four Toreros in double figures, as she scored 15 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field and recorded five rebounds. Morgan Woodrow recorded 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and pulled down six boards, while Izzy Chilcott recoded 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. As a team, USD shot .549 from the field and our rebounded the Dons 36-35.
In the first half, the Toreros came out firing on all cylinders, as a Conners lay-up sparked a 7-0 USD run over the first 2:39 of the game, which forced the Dons into a timeout. The two teams then traded points over the next few minutes, before a Kame jumper gave the Toreros their fist double-digit lead of the game at 15-4 with 14:17 to go.
San Diego remained in complete control of the game, as they continued to score points at a rapid pace, and the USD defense held the Dons offense in check. USD would eventually build up a lead as many as 19 at 33-14 on a Klara Wischer lay-up with 7:38 to go, before settling for a 42-29 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, San Diego quickly built up their lead to 16 at 48-32 on a Conners jumper with 16:14 to go. The Toreros would then managed to maintain a double-digit lead over a majority of the half, and went on to once again build up a 19-point lead at 68-49 on a Chilcott lay-up with 4:16 to go, and appeared to be in complete control of the game. However, the Dons made a late push and managed to cut the lead down to nine at 70-61 on a pair of Vania Singleterry free throws with 1:01 to go. But San Diego didn't fade away, as they answered back with a 4-0 run to go up 13 at 74-61, before settling for a 74-63 victory.
For the Dons, Rhenia Ale led the scoring effort with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting form the field, while Aundrea Gordon (13 points) and Bailey Barbour (10 points) were the other two Dons in double figures. As a team, USF shot .367 from the field.
San Diego will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Malibu to take on the Pepperdine Waves in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside the Firestone Fieldhouse.
