NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of San Diego baseball team pounded out a season-high 22 hits to help propel the Toreros to a 13-9 win over Lipscomb University Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
San Diego (10-3) wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across six runs in the top of the first inning on six hits. Louie Lechich led off the game with a single and he moved to second on a Julian Duran walk. After Kris Bryant drew a walk to load the bases, Corey LeVier drove in Lechich with an RBI single up the middle. Andrew Daniel kept things rolling with a grand slam to left field, and after a pitching change, Dillon Haupt capped off the scoring with a solo home run to left field to give USD a 6-0 lead.
The Bison (4-9) would take back a run in the bottom of the first on a Messer run-scoring double to left field to move the score to 6-1.
San Diego then took back that run in the second inning on a Connor Joe run-scoring double to left field, which scored Haupt, who had doubled, to give USD back a 6-run lead at 7-1.
After Lipscomb scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, San Diego would erase that with a four run top of the fifth inning. USD scored their runs on a bases-loaded walk, a Daniel RBI single, and a Haupt two-run double. USD would then go on to add two more runs in the top of the ninth to cap their scoring for the day.
Offensively for the Toreros, Daniel led the way as he went 4-for-6 with a homerun, a double and five RBI. Both Lechich and Haupt went 4-for-6 as well with Haupt recording a home run, a double and four RBI.
Ryan Keller (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 0.2 innings of work. Michael Wagner picked up his nation-leading seventh save of the season, as he allowed one run on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. Ben Johnson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Bison, as he allowed five runs on three hits, 9.9 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. game against Lipscomb.
