MALIBU, Calif. - The 20th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Pepperdine University in the West Coast Conference championship game Sunday afternoon in the final regular-season game of the season at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros finish the regular-season with a 40-15 overall record and they finish in second place of the WCC with a 15-9 conference record. With the win, the Waves finish the regular-season with a 34-21 overall record and they win the WCC championship with a 16-8 record. The Toreros and Waves will now both await Monday's NCAA selection show to learn where, and who they will be playing in the upcoming NCA Regionals. The show airs live on ESPNU at 9 a.m. (PT).
The Waves were able to take advantage of several USD miscues in the bottom of the first inning. The Waves scored their runs on a USD throwing error, a Joe Sever run-scoring double and a Tony Cooper sacrifice fly to right field to take a 3-0 lead.
Pepperdine then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Toreros did manage to spoil the shutout for the Waves, as they scored one run in the ninth. Connor Joe singled up the middle and moved to second on a ground out. Lucas Hagberg then hit an RBI single to left field, which scored Joe to put the game at its final of 5-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Andrew Daniel led the way, as he went 2-for-3, as the only Torero to record multiple hits on the day.
Calvin Drummond (8-6) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros on the mound, as he allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits in 4.1 innings of work. Pepperdine's Corey Miller (8-4) picked up the win on the mound for the Waves, as he allowed no runs on three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
