PROVO, Utah - The offensive onslaught continued on Friday evening for the 19th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team, as they pounded out 18 hits in a 13-2 victory over Brigham Young University in a West Coast Conference game at Larry H. Miller Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 35-11 overall, move to 12-5 in the WCC, and they have claimed the WCC series with the Cougars. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 18-20 overall, and 7-7 in the WCC.
San Diego's offense was paced once again by Kris Bryant, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Corey LeVier went 3-for-4, with a double and two RBI, while Austin Bailey went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Austin Green went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Andrew Daniel went 2-for-6 with a double.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they picked up right where they left off last night, hitting just about everything thrown to the plate. AJ Robinson led off the game with a solo home run to right field. Then with one out, Kris Bryant kept things rolling, as he drew a four-pitch walk, and he moved to third on a Corey LeVier single to third. Louie Lechich then laid down a bunt to the pitcher and the Cougars were able to get Bryant at the plate, allowing Lechich to reach on a fielder's choice. Bryan Haar then tripled to centerfield scoring the next two runs, and Connor Joe doubled in Haar, while Austin Bailey drove in Joe with a RBI single to give USD a comfortable 5-0 lead.
USD then went on to score one run in the second one in the fourth three in the sixth to grab a 10-0 lead.
BYU managed to spoil the shutout for the Toreros in the bottom of the sixth, as they scored one run on a Wes Guenther RBI single, which scored Stephen Wells, who had singled, to move the score to 10-1.
USD then added one run in the seventh, two in the ninth and the Cougars scored one run in the eighth to put the game at its final of 13-2.
Paul Sewald (8-1) turned in another masterful performance on the mound as he held the Cougar bats at bay, only giving up one hit through the first five innings, before ending the day with 8.0 innings of work allowing two runs on seven hits. BYU's starter Marc Oslund (4-1) was saddled with the loss as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. (PT) as they conclude this three-game series .
