Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas. - The 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (2-1) dropped its first match of the season in a 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 12-25) decision to No. 2 Texas (3-0) in the championship match of the Burnt Orange Classic Saturday evening.

Alaysia Brown and Katie Hoekman paced the Torero offense with seven kills apiece, while Brown hit for a .357 clip and Hoekman hit for a .176 clip. Rachel Alvey recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs, while Kandiss Anderson led the team with 11 digs. As a team, USD hit .083, which was a season low for the Toreros.

In the first set, Texas jumped out to a 9-4 lead, grabbing the early momentum, which forced the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, a Carrie Baird kill ignited a 6-2 San Diego run, pulling USD to within two at 12-10. USD would then pull back to within two on a few more occasions with the last time coming at 22-20, forcing the Longhorns into a timeout. Out of this break, a Baird kill cut the lead down to one at 21-20, but the Longhorns would then outscore USD 4-0 down the stretch to escape with a 25-21 win.

In the second set, the Toreros and Longhorns were once again engaged in a tight nit competition, with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two for half of the frame. Then with the set knotted at 15-all, the Longhorns managed to put together a 4-0 run to grab the momentum and take a 19-15 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. USD would cut the lead in half at 19-17, but that is as close as they could get, as the home team went on to take the second set 25-19.

In the third and final set, it was close in the early going, but then with the score knotted at 4-all, Texas would put together a 17-3 run, which gave them all the momentum and a 21-7 lead. Texas never looked back as they completed the victory with a 25-12 victory.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they head up to Long Beach for a 7 p.m. showdown with Long Beach State.
