LONG BEACH, Calif. - Behind a balanced offensive attack, the 20th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) victory over Long Beach State Friday evening in a non-conference match.
Junior middle hitter Chloe Ferrari paced the Torero offense with nine kills, while only committing one error on 20 swings, to hit for a .400 clip. Alaysia Brown, Katie Hoekman and Carrie Baird all recorded seven kills apiece, while Kandiss Anderson recorded nine digs to lead the defensive effort. Rachel Alvey recorded 29 assists in helping steer the Torero offense to a .220 team attack percentage.
In the first set, it was a back and forth affair with both teams taking their turn with the lead, and neither team having a lead bigger than three. Then with the score at 17-16 in favor of LBSU, a Hoekman kill jump started an 8-2 Torero run, closing out the frame and giving USD a 25-19 victory.
In the second set, USD jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the early going, but the 49ers managed to fight their way back into a tie with the Toreros at 9-9. Then USD went on a 5-1 run to grab back the momentum and took a 14-10 lead. LBSU was able to stay to within three over the next few volleys, but the Toreros never surrendered the lead and went on to claim set two with a 25-20 win.
In the third set, the 49ers grabbed the first two points, however a LBSU service error ignited a 5-0 San Diego run that was book ended on a Amber Tatsch block to give USD a 5-2 lead. Long Beach State answered back with a 6-3 run of their own, knotting up the score at 8-all. The two teams then sea-sawed back and forth a bit with each team each team taking their turn with the lead, and neither team having a lead bigger than three. Then with the set knotted at 18-18, a Ferrari kill sparked a 7-1 run to close out the frame and give USD a 25-19 win.
USD will return to action on Friday as they open play in the USC Invitational with the host Women of Troy at 7 p.m.
