SAN JOSE, Calif. - Behind five Toreros scoring in double figures, paced by senior forward Felicia Wijenberg's career-high 18, the University of San Diego women's basketball team slowed down the normally high-scoring machine of San Jose State University Saturday afternoon, to pick up a 88-60 win at the Event Center.
With the win, the Toreros remain perfect on the season, moving to 4-0, while scoring a season-high 88 points. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 4-2 overall.
San Jose State, which came into the game averaging 90 ppg, was smothered by USD's defense, as the Toreros held them to a season-low 60 points. SJSU as a team only managed to shoot .356 form the field,while USD shot .432 from the field.
Wijenberg led all players with her career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, while also pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out three assists and recording one block and one steal. Wijenberg wasn't the only Torero to record a career-high, as Malina Hood scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Alysse Barlow scored a season-high 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Both Amy Kame and Sophia Ederine scored 10 points a piece with Ederaine pulling down 10 points to post her second double-double of the season. USD out rebounded the Spartans by 30 at 61-31.
In the first half, it was a back and forth affair in the early going, as both teams took the lead and neither team had a lead bigger than two. Then with the Spartans clinging to an 11-10 lead with 14:16 to go, a Wijenberg jumper sparked a 13-2 Torero run over the next five minutes of action to give USD its first double-digit lead of the game at 23-13 with 9:53 to go. USD would keep the pedal to the medal and went on to push their lead up to 16 at halftime, leading 38-22.
In the second half, USD opened the frame on a 5-0 run to push their lead quickly to 21 on a Wijenberg free throw to give USD a 43-22 advantage with 18:01 to go. USD never looked back, as they continued to dominate every aspect of this game, and eventually led by as many as 36 at 80-44 on a pair of Ederaine free throws with 8:03 to go. USD then cruised its way to a 88-60 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they host the University of Idaho in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
