Feb. 24, 2013

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team pounded out 14 hits and picked up a 14-2 win over Kent State University Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 3-4 overall, and claim the four-game series with the Golden Flashes, three games to one. With the loss, KSU fall to 1-7 overall.

The Golden Flashes got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score one run on two hits in the top of the second inning. The KSU run came on an Evan Campbell RBI single, which scored Sawyer Polon, who had singled, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

San Diego answered right back as they put up eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second inning. Back-to-back singles to left field by Connor Joe and Austin Green set the table for USD. After both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Louie Lechich drove in Joe with an RBI single to center field, which moved Green to third. Jerod Smith then singled to the shortstop which scored Green and moved Lechich to second. After a Grant Melker sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, Chris Woolley hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lechich for the third run of the inning. Andrew Daniel kept things going as he walked, and he moved to second on a wild pitch, which also scored Smith from third for the fourth run of the inning. Kris Bryant then launched the first Torero home run ever in Fowler Park, a two-run shot over the right center field fence to give USD a 6-1 lead. Dillon Haupt then was hit by a pitch, and after a pitching change, Connor Joe moved Haupt to second on a single to centerfield. Green was then hit by a pitch to load the based, and Lechich doubled in the next two runs to cap the scoring for the inning and giving the Toreros a comfortable 8-1 lead.

USD went on to score two runs in the third inning, three in the sixth, and one in the seventh to round off their scoring for the day.

Offensively for the Toreros, Lechich led the way, as he went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and one run scored. Chris Woolley also had a good day at the plate, as he went 3-for-4with a double and two RBI, while and Joe went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.

Max Homick (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. Michael Clark (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Golden Flashes, as he allowed seven runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they head to the East Coast and take on Coastal Carolina in a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
