SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team has re-entered the top-25 at No. 25 in the latest Baseball America top-25 poll. The Toreros are also reappearing in the Collegiate Baseball top-30 poll at No. 30.
The Toreros posted a 3-1 record this past week at the West Coast Conference Tournament en route to winning the tournament championship and earning the league's automatic bid in the NCAA Regionals.
The Toreros began the week by defeating BYU with a 9-8 win in the opening round game. The Toreros put on their late rally caps and an Austin Bailey walk-off RBI single gave the Toreros the victory. Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 3-for-6 with two RBI, while Dillon Haupt went 1-for-1 with a grand slam and four RBI. Max Homick (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no run on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.
USD then dropped a heartbreaking 10-8 decision to the University of San Francisco in the second game. The Dons walk-off with a three-run homer to claim the win. Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
USD then bounced back with a 7-4 win over BYU behind the stellar pitching performance from Louie Lechich. Lechich (4-4) held the normally potent BYU offense at bay, as he allowed just one hit going into seventh inning. He finished with allowing three runs on three hits in a career-high 6.2 innings of work, while striking out a pair of batters. Offensively for the Toreros, Lechich led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Connor Joe went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
The Toreros then capped of the weekend with a 2-0 win over USF in the championship game. USD was able to get on the back of freshman left-hander Troy Conyers, as he simply dominated the Dons bats, pitching a complete game two-hit gem, while striking out nine. Offensively for the Toreros, Austin Green led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Kris Bryant also went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they open play at the UCLA Regional against Cal Poly at 2 p.m.
