NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team (6-4-0) shutout Cal State Northridge (4-6-0) 2-0 Sunday afternoon behind two first half goals.
In a rematch of a September 1 match where the Toreros won 3-1, USD was able to take advantage of first half opportunities to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Toreros survived a barrage of shot attempts by the Matadors to earn their third shutout of the 2013 season.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute when Michaela Dooley headed home a Meghan O'Rourke cross. Dooley, a freshman, now leads the team with six goals.
The Toreros would tack on one more goal in the 41st minute on freshman Rachel Conners' first career collegiate goal. Caitlyn Kretzschmar's cross pulled the goalie from the back line, giving Conners a wide open net.
In the second half the Matadors attempted 13 shots to the Toreros four, but Michelle Craft and the Torero defense kept the net on the lockdown to earn their third shutout of the season.
Craft (6-4-0), who had four saves, earned the win. The Matadors Cynthia Tafoya (4-3-0) had three saves and takes the loss.
The Toreros won't return to action until Monday September 30th when they host Long Beach State for a 7:00 p.m. match.
