SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind an all around team effort, and a game-high 20 points from sophomore guard
Malina Hood, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a 76-58 win over the University of San Francisco Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 18-2 overall, move to 7-2 in the WCC and have now won three consecutive games, while remaining in second place in the conference standings, just a game back of WCC-leading Gonzaga. With the loss, the Dons fall to 7-12 overall, move to 2-7 in the WCC and have now lost six consecutive games.
Hood led all players with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, while also going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and she recorded two steals and one block. Amy Kame displayed her all-around game, as she scored 13 points, recorded a career-high eight assists, had seven rebounds and two steals. The final Torero in double figures was Sophia Ederaine who had 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while pulling down eight rebounds, and recording a pair of blocks. As a team, USD shot 38% from the field, and out rebounded the Dons 43-36.
In the first half, the Dons took advantage of a slow start for the Toreros and raced out to an 8-0 lead over the first four minutes of action, forcing USD head coach Cindy Fisher to call a timeout. Out of the break in action, USD turned up the pressure defense, and that in turn resulted in offense for the Toreros as an Alysse Barlow jumper sparked a 12-3 Torero run to give USD their first lead of the game at 12-11 on a Kame jumper with 10:20 to go.
The teams then began to trade basket-for-basket over the next three minutes with six lead changes, and a Barlow 3-pointer gave USD back the lead for good at 19-17 with 7:19 to go. USD would then slowly begin to build up their lead, and managed to go into the break up eight at 35-27.
In the second half, the Dons came out with some good defensive pressure that caused the Toreros some problems, as once again USD came out a little flat. Then with San Diego leading 39-36, a Felicia Wijenberg jumper sparked a 7-0 Torero run, that was capped on a Hood 3-pointer, to give USD its first double digit lead of the game at 46-36 with 14:40 to go.
The Toreros would then maintain a 9-13 point lead over the next 10 minutes of play, until a Kathrine Hamilton free throw sparked a 10-0 San Diego run to give USD a 21-point lead at 72-51 with 2:00 to play. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 76-58 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they head to Stockton, Calif. to take on the newest member of the WCC, University of the Pacific, in a 7 p.m. game.
