SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Santa Clara University Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Torero Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 7-7-2 overall, and move to 3-3-0 in the WCC. With the win, the Broncos improve to 11-6-0 overall and move to 4-2-0 in the WCC.
SCU got on the scoreboard first, as in the 12th minute of action, Brittany Ambrose took a shot that was saved by USD starting goalkeeper Michelle Craft, however the ball managed to get away from Craft and found the feet of Kellie Peay, and she was able to put the ball into the back of the net off the rebound, to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
Just a little over a minute later, Sofia Huerta was able to tally the first of two goals on the afternoon. This one came from about 25 yards out, as she bent the ball into the back of the net to move the score to 2-0.
After Huerta put the match out of reach for USD in the 77th minute of action with her 12th goal of the season, USD would spoil the shutout in the 79th minute of play. Julia Sherwood sent a pass to Mariah Butera, and she in turn corralled the ball and get it past the SCU goalkeeper, putting the match at its final of 3-1.
The Toreros were outshot 9-6, but San Diego held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks at 6-4.
Craft was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed two goals and recorded two saves. Andi Tostanoski was credited with the win, as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they head up to take on the University of the Pacific in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
