SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team (4-6-2, 0-2-0 WCC) suffered a 2-0 loss to Gonzaga University (8-5-0, 3-0-0 WCC) Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match at Torero Stadium.
USD as a team outshot the Bulldogs 15-9, and held a 9-7 advantage in corner kicks, but it was Gonzaga who was able to find the back of the net this evening.
After both teams battled to a scoreless first half, in which USD held a 8-2 advantage in shots, the Bulldogs managed to score the game-winner in the 54th minute of action. Katey Pennington threw the ball in, and it found the feet of Heather Johnson, and she in turn hit a laser strike into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Zags a 1-0 lead.
GU then scored the final goal of the match in the 82nd minute of action, as Pennington scored from just outside the goal box into the upper left corner to put the match at its final of 2-0.
Michelle Craft was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed two goals and recorded four savers. GU's Christie Tombari was credited with the shutout win, as she allowed no goals and recorded four saves.
Nikki Pappalardo, Mariah Butera and Julia Sherwood all had three shots a piece to head the USD offensive output, while Jacqueline Altschuld and Victoria Walker had two shots apiece.
USD will return to action on Sunday, as they welcome the Portland Pilots to town for a 11:30 a.m. match. This match will air live on TheW.tv.
