SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a career-high 27 points from sophomore guard
Maya Hood, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (1-0) opened up its 2014-15 season in style, with a 82-42 win over Cal State San Marcos (1-3) Saturday evening in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Hood scored her career-high 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Sophia Ederaine also had a dominate performance, as she tied a career-high with 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, and she pulled down five rebounds, and had three blocks. As a team, USD shot 43.6% from the field, and out rebounded the Cougars 52-40. All but one Torero who stepped on the floor this evening scored at least two points.
Heather Thompson paced the Cougars offense, as she scored a team-best 20 points, and pulled down 13 boards to record a double-double. As a team, the Cougars shot 29.5% from the field.
In the first half, San Diego wasted no time in getting to work, as they opened up the frame on a 22-2 run over the first 11:06 of action. San Diego never had to worry from this point on. San Diego would go on to build up a lead in the first half to as many as 32 on a pair of Hood free throws, with 2:18 to go. CSUSM then managed to close out the frame on a 5-0 run to go into the break, down 44-17.
In the second half, it was more of the same, as USD opened up the frame on a 15-0 run and just cruised from there. San Diego never had to look back, and went on to lead by as many as 44, before settling for the 40-point win.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they host Cal State Fullerton in a 6 p.m. non-conference game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
