Toreros Rally Past Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (3-0) overcame an 11-point second half deficit to claim a 58-52 win over the University of Idaho (1-2) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Memorial Gym.

Senior forward Sophia Ederaine recorded her second consecutive double-double with 13 points, and 13 rebounds, and she also recorded a game-high six blocks. Maya Hood led the team in scoring with 17 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field, and she went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. Katherine Hamilton was the final Torero in double figures, as she had 16 on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. As a team, USD shot 31.5% from the floor, and out rebounded the Vandals 40-35.

The Toreros came out firing on all cylinders, as an Ederaine jumper sparked a 9-2 USD run that was book ended on a Malina Hood 3-pointer with 17:11 to go. The Vandals then responded with a 7-1 run over the next 2:29 to pull back to with one at 10-9 with 14:43 to go in the first half.

The two teams then traded points over the next few minutes, until a Karlee Wilson jumper gave the Vandals their first lead of the game at 17-15 with 8:19 to go. There were then four lead changes over the next four minutes, before the home team took the lead back on a pair of Stacey Barr free throws with 4:04 to go. Idaho then remained in front for the remainder of the period, and went into the break up 31-25.

The Vandals opened up the second half on a 7-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 38-27 with 17:48 to go. San Diego then responded, as a Hamilton 3-pointer sparked a 20-4 USD run to give the Toreros a 47-42 lead with 10:53 to go.

Idaho then went on a 7-0 run to regain the momentum and the lead at 49-47 with 5:50 to go. However, this is as close as Idaho would get to winning, as a Ederaine lay-up sparked a 11-3 run over the remainder of the game to give the Toreros the come-from-behind win.

San Diego will return to action on Tuesday, as they return to the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion to take on Montana State in a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
