LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team saw its 2014 season come to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss to No. 2 UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday evening at Drake Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros conclude the season with an overall record of 11-6-4. With the win, the Bruins improve to 12-4-4, and will advance on to play California on Nov. 30 in the next round of the tournament.
After the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation, it was the Bruins who were able to find the back of the next in extra time. In the 96th minute of action, Leo Stolz corralled a pass from Abu Danladi, and snuck the ball into the goal to give the Bruins the 2-1 win.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they were able to find the back of the net in the 20th minute of play. Josh Cintas sent a cross to Parker Price inside the goal box, and he in turn put the back into the goal off the left post to give USD the early 1-0 advantage.
The Bruins then managed to even up the score in the second half, as in the 59th minute of play, Stolz took a free kick for the home team and he managed to get the ball into the back of the net, moving the score to 1-1
USD outshot UCLA 14-9, but the Bruins held a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Thomas Olsen was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as he allowed two goals and recorded three saves. His counterpart, E. Edwards Jr., was credited with the win for the Bruins, as he allowed one goal and recorded five saves.
