SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (5-1) had four players in double figures paced by Malina Hood's 17, to help fuel the Toreros to a 78-53 win over previously undefeated Dartmouth (4-1), Monday evening in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Malina Hood paced the Torero offense with 17 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arc, to go along with five rebounds. Sophia Ederaine recorded her fifth consecutive double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while also collecting three blocks. Maya Hood was the third Torero in double figures, as she had 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, and Cori Woodward rounded things off with a season-high 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, to go along with three assists. As a team, USD shot 40.8% from the field, and out rebounded the visitors 51-30.
In the first half, Dartouth managed to scored the first basket of the game, but a Malina Hood 3-pointer then sparked a 16-0 San Diego run that was capped on a Ederaine free throw to give the Toreros a 16-2 lead with 11:50 to go. USD continued to push forward and would lead by as many as 21 at 36-15 with 2:29 to go, before settling for a 40-22 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, it was a much more even battle, as the Big Green almost matched the Toreros point-for-point, while USD scored 38 to Dartmouth's 31. USD would build up a lead to as many as 25, which was the final margin of victory.
For the Big Green, Fani Szabo led the offensive charge with a game-high 26 points on 11-of-23 shooting some the field, and she pulled down four rebounds, had two assists and four steals. As a team, Dartmouth shot 35% from the field.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they head to Ogden, Utah to take on Weber State in a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
