SEATTLE, Wash. - Behind a 15-point, 14-rebound, and eight-block performance from senior forward Sophia Ederaine, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up its fourth consecutive win, a 59-54 decision over Seattle University, in a non-conference game at the Connolly Center.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-1 overall, move their winning streak to four, and are off to the second best start in program history. With the loss, the Redhawks fall to 2-6 overall.
Ederaine scored her 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, and she pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds, while recording a season-high eight blocks, one shy of her career-high. Malina Hood also recorded 15 points for the Toreros on 5-of-13 shooting from the field, including hitting three 3-pointers. The final Torero in double figures was Cori Woodard, who scored 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, while also dishing out four assists. As a team, USD sot 45.1% from the field, and were even in rebounding with the Redhawks at 41 apiece.
In the first half, San Diego came out firing on all cylinders as a Hood lay-up sparked a 12-0 Torero run to open up the game, forcing the home team into a timeout. Seattle U then responded with a 12-3 run of their own, to pull back to within three at 15-12 with 8:58 to go.
A Katherine Hamilton lay-up then sparked a 10-4 Torero run over the next 3:30 to push the San Diego lead back up to nine at 25-16 with 5:29 to go. San Diego would then managed to hold onto this margin heading into the break up 31-22.
In the second half, USD quickly pushed their lead up to double-digits on a Woodward jumper, and then remained in the lead with a 7-10 point margin for a majority of the frame. Then with USD leading 55-45 with 3:06 to go, Seattle made one final push, and used a 9-3 run to pull back within four with 1:46 to go.
But this is as close as they would get, as an Ederaine free throw with 18 seconds left, sealed the Torero victory.
USD will return to action on Sunday, as they remain on the road, and head to Irvine, to take on the Anteaters of UC Irvine in a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
