OGDEN, Utah - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (7-1) used a second-half surge to claim a 59-50 win over Weber State University (4-4) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Dee Events Center.
The Hood sisters paced the Torero offense, as Malina Hood led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, while Maya Hood recorded a double-double with 12 points, on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor, and she pulled down 10 rebounds. Sophia Ederaine saw her impressive streak of five double-doubles come to an end, as she scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. As a team, USD shot 36.5% from the field, and they out rebounded the Wildcats 48-31.
In the first half, Weber State opened up the game on a 9-3 run over the first three minutes of action. Then a Malina Hood 3-pointer sparked a 9-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Malina Hood lay-up to give the Toreros their first lead of the game at 12-11 with 13:23 to go.
After a WSU lay-up gave the Wildcats back the lead, a Sydney Williams lay-up sparked a 10-0 Torero run over the next five minutes of play, to give San Diego a 22-13 lead with 8:26 to go. USD would then remain in front by 7-10 points over the remainder of the period, and went into the break up nine at 27-19.
In the second half, USD came out firing on all cylinders and opened the frame with a 22-8 run to take a 22-point lead at 49-27 with 14:05 to go. USD then remained in complete control of things for the remainder of the half, and they led by as many as 23, before settling for a 9-point win.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they return home to host cross-town rival San Diego State University inn a 6 p.m. game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
