WCC Release
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Women's Rowing Varsity Eight was named the Crew of the Month (March) by the WCC Thursday morning. The honor comes a day after the Toreros cracked the NCAA Top 20 rankings for the first time in school history.
The Torero women's rowing team's month of March put them on the brink of being ranked. After beginning the month with a scrimmage against LMU, USD traveled to Austin, Tex. to compete in the Longhorn Invitational. In the first day, the Toreros V8 beat Central Florida by over 14 seconds and Kansas State by just under nine seconds to qualify for the championship against perennial championship contender, Yale.
The Toreros' Varsity Eight finished in 6:28.46, by far their fastest time of the weekend, to come in just 2.26 seconds behind Yale to earn second place. Aside from beating Central Florida and Kansas State, the Toreros' Varsity Eight posted lower times than Texas, Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Canisius.
The following weekend at the Pac-12 Challenge in San Francisco, Calif. the Toreros went toe-to-toe with No. 18 Clemson, finishing less than three seconds behind the Tigers in the morning session. Later on that day, the Toreros' V8 finished 3.1 seconds behind Oregon State, who was receiving votes in the NCAA rankings. During the weekend the Toreros top time of 6:36.7 was faster than powerhouses No. 11 Stanford and No. 17 Louisville.
