EUGENE, Ore. - The University of San Diego baseball team's late rally fell short in a 4-3 decision to No. 10 University of Oregon Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at PK Park.
With USD (25-11) trailing, 4-0 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the Toreros finally got to the Oregon pitching staff. With one out, a pitch hit Louie Lechich, and he moved to second on Andrew Daniel single through the left side. Austin Bailey then hit a double down the left field line, which scored Lechich and moved Daniel to third. Jesse Jenner was then walked to load the bases, and Holder singled up the middle, which scored both Jenner and Bailey, to moved the score to 4-3.
Then in the top of the ninth, Brandon DeFazio led off the frame with a stand-up double, only to be thrown out at third, as Connor Joe hit the ball to the pitcher, who in turn threw Defazio out at third. Two batters later, Joe moved to second on a wild pitch, but USD could not find a way to bring him in, leaving the game at its final of 4-3.
The Ducks (28-10) got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the third inning. The Ducks run came on a bases-load groundout to the pitcher, which scored Aaron Payne, who was hit by a pitch, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks then tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain all the momentum take a 4-0 lead, setting up USD's late rally.
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Bailey also went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, to run his hitting streak to 16 games. Joe managed to extend his hitting streak to 19 games with his 1-for-5 performance.
CJ Burdick (2-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of work. Brando Tessar (3-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Ducks, as he allowed no runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they resume West Coast Conference play against Santa Clara University at Fowler Park. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
