MALIBU, Calif. - The 22ND-ranked Pepperdine University hit a walk-off 3-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to even the series with the 24th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
After the Waves tied things up in the bottom of the ninth inning, they would put two aboard in the bottom of the 10th, and with two outs, Brandon Caruso launched a 3-run homer over the left field fence to give the Waves the victory, forcing a rubber game on Sunday.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 34-18 overall and 16-10 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 33-14 overall and 16-7 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, scoring one run on three hits in the top of the first. Andrew Daniel got things started with a triple to right field. Jesse Jenner then hit an RBI single up the middle to score Daniel, giving USD a 1-0 lead.
The Waves then evened the score up in the bottom half of the inning, as they loaded the bases with the first three hitters. Then with one out, Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to right field, to score a run, tying the ball game at 1-1.
After the Waves took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, USD responded in the top of the seventh to score two runs on a Connor Joe 2-run homer, which scored Conner Jauch, who had walked, to give USD a 3-2 lead.
Pepperdine then managed to force extra innings once again in the bottom of the ninth, as they pushed across one run on a Manny Jefferson RBI single.
Offensively for the Toreros, Josh Goossen-Brown led the way, as he went 4-for-5.
Max MacNabb (2-1) was saddled wit the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Pepperdine's Eric Karch (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Waves, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they battle Pepperdine in a rubber game at 1 p.m.
