WCC Rowing Championship Results

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's rowing team swept all three races Saturday morning to take their fourth WCC Championship in the past five years. After the Toreros edged Gonzaga in the Varsity Four and Varsity Eight II races, they closed out with a strong first place performance in the Varsity Eight to take back the WCC title. The Toreros will compete in the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history on May 30 in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Toreros finished the day with 42 points, edging out last year's champion, Gonzaga (36), by six points.

With sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60's, the Toreros' Varsity Four kicked off the races by outpacing the field by a full 15 seconds. The reigning WCC Crew of the month clocked in at 7:48.0, with second place Gonzaga coming in at 8:03.2.

The Varsity Eight II race was much closer, but the Toreros prevailed to finish 3.1 seconds ahead of the Zags (6:53.6) with a time of 6:50.5.

The Varsity Eight, the WCC Crew of the Month for March, didn't disappoint, putting an exclamation point on the Toreros' dominant Saturday. They finished in 6:48.6, with their closest competition, Gonzaga, coming in at 6:53.9.

On top of winning all three races, the Toreros also swept all the WCC's major awards. Senior Michelle Campbell was named WCC Rower of the Year, Erica Mayer earned Coxswain of the Year honors, Nneka Anyanwu was named Newcomer of the Year, and Kim Cupini was named WCC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the past six years

Joining Campbell and Anyanwu on the All-WCC team were Taylor Kendzierski and Brianna Lamb, who was named to the team in 2013 as well.

The Toreros, who are just outside the NCAA Top-20 at No. 23, won three straight WCC Championships from 2010-12, but came in second place to Gonzaga last season. The Toreros have now firmly established themselves as one of the top crews on the west coast.

Coming in behind the Toreros and Bulldogs were Saint Mary's and Portland, who tied for third with 27 points. LMU came in fifth with 18 points, followed by Creighton with 12 points and then Santa Clara (five points).

The Toreros will have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Championships, which take place May 30 in Indianapolis, Ind.
