LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 13th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 10 Florida Thursday evening in the first match of the USC Classic at the Galen Center.
With the 22-25, 19-25, 14-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 5-2 on the season, while the Gators improve to 4-2 overall.
Senior opposite hitter Alaysia Brown paced the Toreros offense with nine kills on 17 swings, and she hit for a .235 clip. Lisa Kramer also had a good match as she recorded eight kills, while hitting for a .462 clip. Jianna Bonomi recorded 19 assists, while Kristen Gengenbacher had 15 assists in helping steer the USD offense to a .212 team attack percentage.
In the first set, the Gators raced out to a 6-1 lead to grab the early momentum, and that forced USD into a timeout. The Toreros then caught fire, as a Brown kill sparked a 10-5 run to even the score up at 11-all, which forced Florida into a timeout. The two teams then battled back and forth, and Florida was able to grab a 22-19 lead, which forced San Diego into its final timeout. USD was not able to overcome this deficit, as they dropped set one 25-22.
In the second set, USD kept things close in the early going. However, the Gators used a 5-1 run midway through the frame to grab a 14-7 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. USD was not able to recover from this deficit, as Florida went on to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 win.
In the third set, it was a back and forth battle for half of the frame. Then with the score knotted at 10-10, the Gators caught fire and went on an 11-2 run to take all the momentum and a 21-12 lead, forcing USD into a timeout. The Gators then went on to complete the sweep with a 25-14 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they take on Texas A&M in the USC Classic at USC's Galen Center.
