SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised past San Diego State University, 3-0, Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at Aztec Court.
With the 25-21, 26-24, 25-19 win, the Toreros improve to 6-3 overall, while the Aztecs drop to 3-4 overall with the loss.
Offensively for the Toreros, Alaysia Brown led the way with a team-best 14 kills, while hitting for a .135 clip. Lisa Kramer also had a good match with seven kills, while Jianna Bonomi recorded 25 assists and had 10 digs to post a double-double. As a team, USD hit .255, while holding SDSU to a .172 hitting percentage.
In the first set, USD came out firing on all cylinders, as a Sandra Lozic kill sparked a 7-1 Torero run to give USD all the momentum. The Toreros would then go on to build up a lead to as many as eight at 15-7. But SDSU then made a push and pulled to within two at 20-18, but USD was just too strong, and closed out the frame on a 5-3 run to take set one, 25-21.
In the second set, SDSU was the ones who grabbed the early momentum, as they raced out to a 5-1 lead. USD then slowly began to chip away at the lead, and pulled back to within one at 9-8 on a Canace Finley kill. The Aztecs then managed to maintain in front and went on to take a 16-13 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, USD caught fire, as a Brown kill sparked a 3-0 USD run to even the score at 16-all. The two teams then traded points over the next few possessions. Then USD had set point at 24-22, but SDSU managed to grab the next point to force USD into a timeout with he score at 24-23. The Aztecs then made things really interesting by grabbing the next point to even things up at 24-all. However, USD didn't disappoint Torero fans, as a Brown kill and a SDSU attack error gave USD set two 26-24.
In the third set, it was a back and forth battle right out of the gates, as both teams took their turn with the lead and neither team had a lead bigger than two. Then with the score knotted at 9-all, a Lisa Kramer kill sparked a 4-0 USD run, which force the Aztecs into a timeout. The Toreros then went on to build up a 21-15 lead, before the Aztecs put together a 3-1 run to move the score to 22-18, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. USD then went on to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they welcome the No. 1 ranked Stanford Cardinal to the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Match begins at 7:30 p.m.
