Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 17-kill performance from Alaysia Brown and a 16-kill performance from Sandra Lozic, the 24th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 win over the University of Portland Thursday evening in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

With the 25-17, 25-14, 25-11 win, the Toreros improve to 8-5 overall, move to 1-0 in the WCC and have defeated Portland 45 consecutive times. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the WCC.

Brown led all players with her 17 kills on 35 swings to hit for .457 clip, while also recording a career-high eight digs. Lozic recorded her 16 kills on 23 swings to hit for a .696 clip. Jianna Bonomi recorded a season-high 38 assists, while also recording 16 digs to post a double-double, while Hunter Jennings also recorded 16 digs. As a team, USD hit .479, while holding the Pilots to a .175 attack percentage.

"I think it definitely shows other teams in the conference that we have that ability to pick ourselves up, and that we are going to be a hard team to play against this year," stated Brown. "It was a confidence booster because we came off of a few tough losses in our preseason, so it proved that we are going to be a tough team in this conference."

In the first frame, Portland jumped out to a 7-5 lead to grab the early momentum. Then a Canace Finley kill sparked a 7-3 Torero run to give USD the momentum and a 12-5 lead. The two teams then began to trade points over the next few possessions, before the Toreros grabbed a 19-15 lead on back-to-back Lozic kills to force the Pilots into a timeout. Out of the break, USD never looked back, as they closed out the frame on a 7-2 run to take set one 25-17.

In set two, San Diego raced out to a 7-4 lead, which forced the Pilots into a early timeout. A Portland attack error then sparked a 5-2 USD run, which then caused the Pilots to call its final timeout. San Diego then cruised its way to a 25-14 win, to go into the break up two sets to none.

In the third and final set, San Diego dominated from start to finish, as a Lisa Kramer kill sparked a 10-1 run right out of the gates. San Diego was too strong in the final frame, as Portland could not recover for this early deficit. USD went on to complete the sweep over Portland with a 25-11 victory.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they host Gonzaga University in a 12 noon match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
