SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Caitlyn Kretzschmar's first goal of the season lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team (4-4-2) to its third consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton (2-6-2) Sunday evening in its final WCC tune-up at Torero Stadium.
Despite the fact that Fullerton dominated the time of possession in the first half, it was the Toreros who found the back of the net. In the 44th minute of action, Danielle Gonzales got a hold of the ball, and sent a touch pass over to Rachel Conners, and she in turn hit a one-timer past the Fullerton goalkeeper to give USD a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Titans came out with a lot of pressure in the second frame and in the 65th minute of action, Fullerton found themselves back on level playing field with the Toreros. Amanda Howard had the ball inside the Torero goal box, as she fired off a rocket shot that was blocked by the Toreros defense, only to see the ball bounce to Rebecca Wilson, who then then punched the ball into the back of the net to move the score to 1-1.
USD then took control of the time of possession for the next 10 minutes, and in the 77th minute of the match, the Toreros scored the game-winner. Mariah Butera took a corner kick for USD and in the middle of the crowded goal box, Kretzschmar was there to redirect the ball into the back of the net to give USD the 2-1 win.
Fullerton out shot the Toreros 13-9, and both teams were even in corner kick attempts at five.
Michelle Craft picked up the win in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed no goals and recorded one save. Jennifer Stuart was saddled with the loss in goal for the Titans, as she allowed two goals and recorded three saves.
San Diego will return to action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. as they open West Coast Conference play against the defending champions Brigham Young University.
