SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 15th ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team (4-1) cruised to its third consecutive win, as they swept Villanova University (3-1) by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-16, Friday evening in a non-conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Pacing the Torero offense was junior middle hitter Canace Finley with her 11 kills, tying a season high, on 19 attempts, while hitting for a .421 clip. The only other Torero in double-digit kills was Alaysia Brown, who had 10 on 20 swings, while committing just two errors to hit for a .400 clip. Jianna Bonomi (18 assists) and Kristen Gengenbacher (15 assists) both helped steer the USD offense to a team attack percentage of .333. Hunter Jennings paced the defense for USD as she recorded a match-high 15 digs.
In the first set, USD got off to a great start, as back-to-back Lisa Kramer kills sparked a 9-4 Torero run, giving USD all the momentum and forcing the visitors into a timeout. San Diego continued to remain in control after the timeout and went on to build up a lead of eight at 19-11, forcing Wildcats into their final timeout. Out of the break, USD would go on to close out the frame on a 6-5 run, taking set one 25-16.
In the second set, it was a much closer contest, as the Wildcats managed to keep pace with the Toreros in the early going. Then with the score knotted at 9-all, a Kramer kill sparked a 4-0 USD run to force the Wildcats into a timeout. Out of the break, USD continued to pull further ahead and went to to take a 21-14 lead to once again force Villanova into a timeout situation. San Diego never looked back, as they went in to claim set two 25-17.
In the third and final set, the Wildcats once again kept things close and interesting in the early going. Then with the score knotted ay 9-all, a Brown kill sparked a 4-0 USD run to give the Toreros a 13-9 lead. USD then put together a 5-3 run to take a commanding 18-12 lead, and the Toreros just cruised from that point on, to complete a sweep with a 25-16 win in set three.
USD will return to action on Saturday as they take on Northwestern University in a 7 p.m. match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
