SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team had a pair of chances to win the game in the final 13 seconds of action, but both opportunities did not fall, as the Torero saw their 5-game winning streak come to an end Thursday evening with a 57-56 loss to Saint Mary's College at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the Toreros trailing 57-56 and just 53 seconds to go, USD clamped down on defense and forced the Gaels into a poor shot in the final second of the shot clock, but the Gales managed to come down with the rebound, only to turn it right back over to USD, as Maya Hood stole it away from Carly Turner with 16 seconds left. USD then called a timeout with 13 seconds left, drew up a play, and Malina Hood took the ball to the basket, only to see her shot not go in, then the ball went out of bounds to the Toreros with four seconds left.

USD then inbounded the ball and Maya Hood heaved up a last second 3-point shot, and it did not go in, leaving the game at its final of 57-56.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-3 overall, move to 5-2 in the WCC, and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Gaels improve to 12-5 overall, and move to 5-1 in the WCC.

Malina Hood led the Toreros offense with a team-best 16 points, connecting on 6-of-14 shots, including hitting four three-pointers. Maya Hood added in eight points, and pulled down seven rebounds, while Sydney Williams scored a career-high eight points, and Katelyn McDaniel led the rebounding effort for the Toreros with 10. As a team, USD shot 36.8% from the field, and were out rebounded 42-31.

For the Gaels, Lauren Nicholson paced the offense with a game-high 20 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field, and Stella Beck added in 12 points and Hayley Hendricksen added in 10 more points. The Gaels shot just 37.3% from the field.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they host the University of the Pacific in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
