SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Behind another offensive explosion, and a four-touchdown performance from redshirt freshman quarterback Anthony Lawrence, the University of San Diego football team (5-2) cruised to a 45-14 win over visiting Warner University (2-6) Saturday evening in a non-conference game at Torero Stadium.
Lawrence was brilliant for a second consecutive week, as he threw for 278 yards on 21-of-26 passing, and he recorded four touchdowns. Jereke Armstrong had another great all-around performance, as he had 71 yards of rushing on 10 carries, while also recording four receptions for 16 yards, and had one receiving and one rushing touchdown. Blake Martin led the ground attack for the Toreros, as he recorded 88 yards on 13 carries and had one touchdown. Ross Dwelley, and Justin Priest each had five receptions, and one touchdown, with Dwelley recording 75 yards and Priest recording 71 yards. Defensively, Devyn Bryant and Ray Clark led the way with seven tackles apiece, while Jonathan Petersen had four tackles and one sack for a three-yard loss.
As a team, USD outgained the Royals with 525 yards of total offense to 285 yards. USD recorded 27 first downs, while holding the Royals to just 11 first downs, and just 90 yards on the ground.
For Warner, DJ Davis recorded 186 yards, had two touchdowns, and one interception on 11-of-19 passing attempts. Jeff Suarez led the receiving corps with 157 yards on four receptions, and he had a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, Byron Masoline recorded 51 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, Loronza Smith led the way with a game-high 11 tackles, including one tackle for a five-yard loss.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they resume Pioneer Football League action with a game at Stetson. Kick-off is set for 10 a.m. (PT).
