SANTA CLARA, Calif. â€" The USD men's soccer team lost their regular season finale 3-0 at Santa Clara Saturday evening. The Toreros (10-5-3, 5-1-1) and Broncos (10-7-1, 5-1-1) finish the season as co-champions of the WCC, but Santa Clara earns the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Toreros, who entered the week with the No. 52 RPI, will learn if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament during the NCAA Selection show Monday at 10:00 a.m.
The Toreros controlled the early moments of the match, and had a great opportunity in the sixth minute when Torrey DeArmas sent cross from the left wing that found Eric Budniewksi's head. However, the Broncos' goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh made a great diving save to his left.
Things then quickly unraveled for the Toreros. In the eighth minute the Broncos' Alfred Simmons sent a cross in from the left wing; USD's goalkeeper Thomas Olsen came out to knock the ball away, but couldn't get there in time and Carlos Delgadillo poked it in to give the Broncos an early lead.
In the 27th minute, one of the Toreros' top defenders, senior Patrick Zimmer, was given a red card after taking down a Bronco as the last man back, forcing USD to play with ten men for the rest of the match.
Less than four minutes later the Broncos took advantage when Simmons and Delgadillo hooked up again in the 31st minute to give Santa Clara a 2-0 advantage.
The Broncos added to their total early in the second half. Delgadillo, continued his impressive evening when he sent a header in to Max Ornstil, who was able to finish to give Santa Clara a 3-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Both teams only managed four shots, but Santa Clara made the most of their opportunities. USD only had one shot on goal (Eric Budniewski).
Thomas Olsen (10-5-3), who has recorded three straight shutouts, was saddled with the loss.
