SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€"The University of San Diego women's basketball team led from start to finish in a thrilling 59-54 win over the University of Arizona Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros remain perfect on the season at 3-0, and also snapped a five-game losing streak to the Wildcats. With the loss, Arizona falls to 2-1 on the young season.
Malina Hood led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, while also pulling down seven rebounds and collecting three steals. Maya Hood posted her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Katherine Hamilton was the final USD player in double figures, as she had 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field, and she recorded four assists.
As a team, USD shot 37.7% from the field, while the Wildcats shot 41.1%. Arizona out rebounded the Toreros 37-35, but San Diego did force 16 turnovers, and committed 15 turnovers themselves.
For the Wildcats, Breanna Workman scored 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field. The only other Arizona player in double figures was Malena Washington, who also had 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field. Dejza James led the team in rebounding with 10, and Washington led the assist category with four.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they open play in the USD Courtyard San Diego Central Classic with a 4 p.m. game against Valparaiso.
