Cougars Deal USD First Loss of the Season

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" Despite Malina Hood's game-high 28 points and Maya Hood's double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, the University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season, 78-72, to Washington State University Sunday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 7-1 overall, and saw its 7-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Cougars improve to 7-1 overall.

Malina Hood scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-26 shooting from the field, and she pulled down eight rebounds. Maya Hood scored her 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, and with her 11 rebounds, she recorded her team-leading fourth double-double of the season. Sydney Williams was the final USD player to record double figures as she chipped in with 10 points.

As a team, USD shot 41.4% from the field, while WSU shot 54.2% from the floor. San Diego out rebounded the Cougars 38-33, and USD only turned the ball over 11 times, while WSU has 12 turnovers.

For the visitors, Borislava Hristova led the way with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field. The only other WSU player in double figures was Caila Hailey, who had 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field.

The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday, as they head up to Orange County to take on the Titans of Cal State Fullerton in a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Titan Gym.
