Toreros Dropped at BYU 75-62

PROVO, Utah - After a great defensive stand to start the game the USD men's basketball team (14-14, 7-9) was edged on the road by BYU 75-62 Thursday evening at the Marriott Center. Johnny Dee and Duda Sanadze paced the USD offense with 13 and 12 points respectively, but the Toreros couldn't slow down Tyler Hawes, the WCC's leading scorer, who poured in 28 points.

Playing in front 17,092 fans the Toreros held the potent Cougars' offense scoreless for the first seven minutes opening up a 7-0 lead. However the Cougars responded with a 14-4 run as the two teams battled to a five points lead for BYU at halftime (33-28). Sanadze scored 10 of his 12 points in the first frame.



The Cougars (21-8, 11-5) opened the second half with a 14-2 run and held a double digit lead for most of the half with the Toreros making a couple of runs to stay in the game.



The Toreros made 10 threes on 23 attempts and shot 44 percent from the floor for the game, but were outrebounded by BYU 38-23. Freshman Marcus Harris tied his season-high with nine points and Christopher Anderson chipped in nine assists and four rebounds. Aside from Hawes' 28 points, Anson Winder scored 15 and Kyle Collinsworth posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.



The Toreros have Saturday off but then their tough stretch continues when they play at No. 3 Gonzaga on Thursday.
