ABOUT BIOLA
• San Diego leads the all-time series with Biola 5-4, and Monday's game is the first meeting since the 1973-74 season, when the Toreros won 70-49. Eight of the nine games were played from 1957-58 through 1960-61, when the teams met twice a season, and USD has won the last three, including 102-61 and 110-70 in 1960-61, the only two 100-point games for that Torero team.
• Biola, an NCAA Division II program in La Mirada, Calif., went 15-13 overall and 11-11 in the PacWest Conference in 2025-26 and was picked to finish tied for seventh with Chaminade in the 2026-27 PacWest preseason poll. The Eagles joined the PacWest in 2017-18 and reached the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2021 and 2025.
• Dave Holmquist is in his 50th season as a college head coach and his 47th at Biola. His 1,095 career wins rank fourth all-time among men's college basketball coaches at four-year schools, and he is one of six four-year men's coaches with 1,000 victories. His 1981-82 team went 39-1 and finished as NAIA national runner-up, and his 1983-84 team won the NCCAA national title.
• Holmquist also played two seasons at Biola after transferring from Cypress College and was the Eagles' captain as a senior in 1973-74, the last season the programs met.
• Biola must replace its top three scorers from 2025-26, but seniors Charlie Gehler, Facundo Aranda and Walker Weir return after combining for 56 starts that season. Gehler averaged 11.6 points, made a team-high 71 threes and led the PacWest in 3-point percentage (44.9) in 2025-26, while Weir averaged 6.2 points and Aranda 5.2.
• Gehler played at St. Augustine High School in San Diego and led San Diego Miramar College in scoring (17.3 ppg) as a freshman in 2023-24 before a season at Azusa Pacific. Newcomer Brycen Mackenzie, a redshirt sophomore guard from Northwest Nazarene, was a four-year varsity point guard at Santa Fe Christian in Solana Beach.
• USD assistant coach Jeremy Pope played for Holmquist at Biola, joining the Eagles as a senior guard in 2012-13 after transferring from San Jose State.
SEASON OPENERS
• San Diego is 46-24 in season openers since 1956-57 and 31-16 since moving to Division I in 1979-80.
• The Toreros have won four of their last five openers, all four of the wins at home against non-Division I opponents: La Verne (103-38 in 2021-22), Sonoma State (81-59 in 2022-23 and 68-64 in 2023-24) and Occidental (88-59 in 2025-26). The lone loss in that span was a 68-67 decision against Rider to open 2024-25.
